Balcony and Terrace Artificial Grass: Choosing the Right Pile, Installation and Care
Artificial grass brings the feel of a real lawn to even the smallest urban living spaces. Without watering, mowing or soil to manage, it delivers a soft, barefoot-friendly green surface that holds up beautifully on city balconies, rooftop terraces, cafe seating areas and boutique restaurant patios.
Which Pile Height Works on a Balcony?
For balconies and terraces, 20-25 mm pile heights are the sweet spot. Galaxy, Mercury, Venus and Neptune (20 mm) are the budget-conscious choice for compact balconies — easy to clean and quick to install. Mars (25 mm) offers a softer, more premium underfoot feel, ideal for mid-sized terraces and hospitality settings. Taller piles (40-50 mm) add unnecessary weight to balcony structures and can complicate drainage, so we don't recommend them for above-ground installations.
Why Synthetic Grass Works on Balconies
No watering, no soil, no insects, no pollen — a clear win for residents with allergies. Year-round green appearance brings a sense of nature to apartments that would otherwise feel cut off from outdoor space. The anti-static fibre prevents the snap of static shock that synthetic surfaces can generate; the fire-retardant construction matters especially on balconies, where smoking and outdoor cooking can pose risks. A permeable latex backing drains rainwater through to the balcony floor without trapping moisture or pooling.
Rooftop Terraces and Cafe Patios
Artificial grass weighs only 1-2 kg per square metre, so it never overloads a rooftop or balcony slab. It doesn't damage waterproofing or insulation layers, and can be lifted and re-installed if access is ever needed underneath. Drainage performance keeps existing rooftop catchment systems functioning as designed. Garden furniture, planters and even outdoor pizza ovens can sit on the surface without deformation. For cafe terraces, hotel pool decks and rooftop gardens, it's an installation that pays for itself in maintenance savings within a few seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Artificial grass doesn't need photosynthesis, so low-light environments don't cause yellowing or wilting. On directly sun-exposed balconies, the UV-stabilised fibres maintain their original colour for years without bleaching.
It drains properly. Every product uses a perforated latex backing — rainwater passes straight through to the balcony floor and out through your existing drainage channel. With a normally sloped balcony, no water will pool.
Quite the opposite — it's an advantage. The anti-static and anti-bacterial construction prevents urine smells and microbial buildup. The surface rinses clean with a hose, and pet messes drain through the backing rather than soaking into the surface.
Sweep weekly to clear dust, leaves and surface debris. Once a month, rinse with a hose or a light-pressure water jet. For food or oil spills, a mild soap solution and a soft brush will lift the stain without damaging the fibres.
